Chelsea Official Announcement
Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of United States international Alyssa Thompson from Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League.
The 20-year-old forward, who has already made 22 appearances for the USWNT, has signed with the Blues until 2030.
Thompson said:
“Chelsea is an incredible club, one of the very best in the world. At my age, to have the opportunity to play alongside some of the greatest players globally is amazing. I want to learn, grow, and push myself further, and Chelsea is the perfect environment for me to do that.”
Paul Green, Chelsea Women’s general manager, added:
“We are thrilled to bring Alyssa to the club. She is an exciting, dynamic winger with great pace, capable of playing on either flank, and very strong in one-v-one situations. Alyssa is one of the most talented and promising young players in world football, and we look forward to seeing her continue her development here at Chelsea.”
Thompson, a gifted forward, joined Angel City from Total Futbol Academy in Los Angeles, part of the MLS Next youth system for boys.
In 2023, she became the youngest draft pick in NWSL history when she signed for Angel City. Not only was she the No.1 overall pick that year, but also the first player to enter the league directly from high school.
While studying at Harvard-Westlake School, Thompson was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a sophomore, scoring 48 goals and registering 14 assists in just 17 games.
Her senior international debut came in October 2022, even before entering the NWSL Draft. In front of a sold-out Wembley Stadium, she came on as a substitute in the 84th minute.
At 17 years and 334 days old, she became the youngest player to debut for the USWNT since Mallory Pugh in January 2016.
In April 2023, Thompson earned her first international start in a match against Ireland, playing the full 90 minutes. She became the first teenager to start for the USWNT since 2018.
Since then, she has gradually established herself as a regular in the squad, earning 22 caps and scoring 3 goals to date. During her time at Angel City, she made 63 appearances and scored 15 goals.
Everyone at the club warmly welcomes Alyssa to Chelsea and wishes her every success during her time with the Blues!
